This is my 4th cheap steam espresso maker in the last 15 years. The others have all been Mr Coffee (2 different models) with varying degrees of success, but unfortunately they no longer make the model that lasted the longest (7 years) and the current reviews of the new Mr Coffee models are pretty bad so I thought I'd try a Bella this time.So far it's a mixed bag. The manual says to run plain water through it 2 times before brewing - I ran 5 through it including one primarily through the steamer/frother and did not notice any plastic or metallic smells like some have reported. The carafe is almost identical to the ones that came with the Mr Coffee makers I've used, with two big improvements: the top snaps on (I burned my thumb several times on the old ones trying to hold the lid on while pouring the coffee) and this one does not drip at the lip like the Mr Coffee carafes all did. The width of the included tamper fits the coffee basket perfectly (unlike the Mr Coffee brewers) so you can evenly tamp it down, but it's not deep enough to reach a single serving of coffee. Not a problem for me as I never use less than a full basket of coffee - otherwise it's too weak. The other end of the tamper is a spoon for measuring the coffee.On to brewing... I was pleasantly surprised with the end result - the espresso had a nice oily appearance with a tan colored foam at the top. It's not crema, but what do you expect for the price. I used ground Starbucks French Roast (dark) coffee, the kind you find in the bag at the supermarket, and was also surprised at the flavor - there were some subtleties that I had never tasted using the old Mr Coffee or the automatic drip maker. All in all, a good cup of coffee. The steam wand actually heated the milk faster than the old Mr Coffee machines, and the plastic frother worked surprisingly well, giving a good foamy head to the milk. Just like on all the Mr Coffee machines, the steam wand is too short and too close to the maker, but if you use a smaller pitcher and hold it at an angle, it will work. There's a plastic pressure button on the top of the maker that pops up when pressure is high. At first I thought it was a gimmick, but I found that if you try to steam the milk before the button is fully extended, you'll get hot water in your milk instead of steam, so it does serve a useful purpose. Too bad the manual doesn't mention that.Now for the bad side. First the manual includes the following 'Plasticizer Warning': " CAUTION: To prevent plasticizers from migrating to the finish of the counter top or table top or other furniture, place non-plastic containers or place mats between the appliance and the finish of the counter top. Failure to do so may cause the finish to darken. Permanent blemishes may occur or stains can appear." This makes me wonder if those same plasticizers can also migrate into my coffee or milk, which doesn't sound like it would be very good for your health. Second problem, and it's big, is the cheap switch. This is a very poorly made switch, and I suspect it will sooner or later be the point of failure. You need to turn it very gently (the manual even says so), but when I turn mine until it clicks in the On position, the machine does not turn on. I have to very gently turn it a little further to make it work as indicated by the amber light. Not good. I also had a very hard time removing the plastic frother from the steam wand - you just have to pull straight down with brute force. I prefer latte to cappuccino, and all other cheap steam espresso makers I've used say to take the plastic frother off for just steam. The manual doesn't mention it other than to say wipe the outside with a clean cloth after use, but it HAS to come off for cleaning, otherwise it will quickly fill with dried stale milk residue. Finally the overall sloppy quality is demonstrated by a proofreader's comment being left in the manual - I'll leave it to you to discover it.Bottom line: I don't think anyone would expect Starbucks quality espresso from a machine as inexpensive as this (if you do you will be disappointed). For that you need an espresso maker that uses real pressure - not just steam - and a good one will cost hundreds of dollars. But for the price, this makes a nice cup of espresso and will adequately prep the milk for a latte or cappuccino. My concern is for the lack of quality, especially for the switch. Another review stated that after a short amount of use, smoke started pouring out of the switch and the machine died. I don't understand why a company won't spend a few cents more for a decent switch, and I expect this one won't last long. The warranty on defects and workmanship lasts a full year - I hope I don't have to use it. Will update this review to let you know how it goes over time...Update 8/15/2014: After 1 month, two things have changed. The switch is broken in now and is much easier to turn. It also moves into the On position without the extra effort. The ridge which held the carafe lid on while pouring has completely worn off, and the lid now falls off while pouring out the last bit of coffee, meaning I'm back to burning my thumb to hold it on, just like with the Mr. Coffee machines.

This little espresso maker is awesome for the price! I purchased this Bella device for $31.99 bought and shipped. The next day I saw people paying $75 for it. I have been using this brewer for a solid 4 months now and I love i! Using fresh ground beans makes a perfect espresso, and the steamer arm allows for some great cappuccinos, and lattes.Yes you get some grounds in the espresso, but that is not a significant issue. I did however learn a tough lessen when I touched the bare metal steamer arm by accident while brewing. Definitely not safe to operate within reach of children.But aside for those two item, I have no complaints after making close to 100 brews with this machine. If I were to pay $200 for a fancy espresso bar i may expect more, but I love this device for the price!

This is the 3rd Bella espresso maker I've had and it's the 3rd time the on/off/steamer knob has broken off! Call me stupid for repeatedly re-ordering this espresso maker but I really liked the smaller size and when it works, it's wonderful. However, it only lasts 6 months to a year before the knob breaks off. I suppose you can't expect better for the price. Very disappointing.

I purchased the Bella on Amazon from a different seller. This espresso machine has major problems. Most serious:1. Knob is poorly marked and difficult to turn. After making espresso, it is impossible to turn the knob to the off position. You have to wait for it to cool or unplug. Not very safe.2. See picture: The first time I ran water through the machine, it left a residue of what looks like metal shavings. After running water through the machine a dozen times and repeatedly filling it with water and pouring the water out the top, machine is still topping off the coffee grounds with metal shavings. Definitely a safety issue.3. The opening on the carafe top is too small, causing some of the coffee to spill onto the top rather than dripping into the carafe.

This generation of Bella is very cheaply made, i.e. manual warns that the black plastic material could leach onto your counter to leave a stain. Unsafe: There is no pressure relief button to indicate when safe to open the top cap, etc., etc. The first Bella model appeared to be an identical knockoff of Krups. It was so similar that it reminds me of the Chinese hacking reputation into company computers to steal designs. This new redesign is of low quality.

I bought this espresso maker to replace my long used moka pot. I knew that it wasn't going to be a great espresso machine for this price but I was not prepared for just how poor quality it would be. It was so hard to turn the knob to make the espresso. Within 2 days the writing indicating steam, off, and espresso were almost completely rubbed off. Fine, not a deal breaker. About a week later, the black piece on the steam wand broke and fell off. I was bummed but it was something that I could live with. Then, this morning, less than 2 weeks after getting the machine, it stopped brewing mid espresso. I finished the return this afternoon and ordered a new moka pot. I will just stick with the old school that I know works. Do yourself a favor and do the same.

So dissapointing!!! I have had bellas int the past but I was concered the first time I rotated the on and off button. It was wobbly and hard to rotate and yep, It broke off just 6 months later.But wait, theres more! The grate on the bottom does not remove for cleaning and god forbid your coffee overflows into it because although it looks like a seamed bottom, somehow it all pours out onto your good counter while you least suppect it. Yep, while youre at work. Then to top it all off the light on the machine is SO Faint, that you can't tell if it is brewing or not and most of the it is not and then you spend 20 minutes waiting for coffee and the damn thing isnt EVEN ON! And the pressure in the wand is like a hurricane when you recieve it and then 6 months later you are warming up you milk in the microwave.! Pass on this little affordble wonder.It will break your heart in the end.... sitting here drinking disgusting Kurig right now. :( Oh and it is now twice the price! 99 bucks! Whadevvvverrrr

Well, we were liking this little espresso machine just fine until I noticed that turning the knob from brew to off was getting difficult. This morning the knob broke off. The machine is barely over 2 months old. I see from reviews that others have had the same experience. The insides for the knob are plastic and, obviously, can't withstand the pressure and use. Bummer. Won't buy again.

Received it quick, nicely packaged, no damages.It does the job very well with making espresso, like anything read your instructions on how to properly using this machine. I always recommend running it 3 full cycles of filter water for it to clean itself before you start using this. This goes for any machine you first buy, for it to self raise/remove of whatever.Heats very well and that’s important.Cons: It’s important to note the dial thing that you use to switch to off, steamer and espresso can be very rough and should take caution with taking it carefully for the piece not to break. It’s still one thing I do not like about the machine for how rough you gotta to turn it, but it does feel after a while it loosens up but still something you gotta be careful of breaking.Overall: I would recommend it and I wasn’t disappointed with it.Like anything it does the job.

2nd UPDATE: We were able to get a replacement from Bella which we appreciated, although we had to pay $10 shipping to Canada to return several pieces of the machine as proof we weren't scammers. The replacement started out its life with us fine but then we encountered the same exact same issue: the hotter the machine got the stiffer the on/brew/steam knob got. But you don't have much choice about using it - knob is essential to the machine's use. Sure enough, the knob on the replacement machine also snapped off. It's fitted to the machine with plastic - no way to repair it.UPDATE: Downgrading to 1 star. and would give it 0 stars if I could. Handle snapped off this a.m.Espresso maker, we hardly knew ye. Dead and we're 2 weeks past the 30-day return period. Grrrrr.Makes a good cup of coffee and has a quieter steamer than our old one. Two drawbacks:1. The knob to turn it to the on/brew, steam and off positions is WAY WAY too stiff and hard to use. It's a fight every morning to use. White print that that says "off", "steam" etc. also rubbed off within days so we need to remember what position is what.2. Minor thing: Unlike our old machine, the water container holds a lot more water than the the glass carafe so you have to be careful about not overfilling or you'll have a puddle of coffee on your counter.

Worked really well for about a month. Made perfect crema quickly and steamed a very fine froth. After that it just started taking longer and longer to infuse the coffee so that the product was bitter and the foam too bubbly! I de scaled the machine three times and called the seller. They had me make a claim on line providing a description of the issues, a photo of the model number, and a copy of the sales receipt. I provided those three times now and every week I get an email thanking me and requesting the same information all over again. I complained and got an apology with another request for the exact same info I have sent!! It just a $40 machine, and my $400 machine is back from its annual tune up, so I don't need the Bella just now, but it would be professional to get a repair,replacement, or a refund! Don't buy anything from this company! Finally contacted Amazon for a quick return and refund as Sensio was still trying to ignore my requests! Amazon five stars, Sensio a big zero!

Great little machine, especially for the price!The steam wand plastic covering thing comes off which is awesome because it makes its very easy to clean. It does everything it says it does, and it is definitely worth a try.The only thing we've noticed that isn't as awesome (but still doesn't really bother us but we thought it was worth mentioning) is that when you just want to use the steam wand, you have to turn on the whole machine and it will drip water out of the steam wand a bit before you use it. It doesn't do that when you're making espresso with it because everything is in use, but when you just want to use the steam wand it still thinks it is going through the whole espresso process or something and drips a bit of water.But really, it isn't a big deal at all and I am VERY happy with this purchase and would 100% recommend it to others!
