I borrowed a Chef's Choice Model 615 slicer from a friend on several occasions. I eventually used it enough that I realized that I should buy my own. The 615 is excellent, but I am convinced that this model 609, for something like $60 less, is a far better value.The 615 looks a little prettier (who cares?) and is a bit heavier (which does make it slightly more stable when you are moving the carriage back and forth but the difference is small). Also the 615 has a slightly more powerful motor (at least based on reported wattage). This was the biggest reason that I debated whether or to get this less expensive model. It turns out that I might perceive a slight difference in cutting speed, but the difference is so minute that I cannot be sure I am not imaging things. Worst case scenario: I have to feed the food product into the blade ever so slightly slower.In general I can attest to the quality of Chef's Choice products, so no matter which model slicer you buy I think you will be happy as long as you understand that this in NOT $2k commercial slicer. But I also think that this Model 609 is probably the best value among the other models for the average person.

Not worth the money. Bought this item to cut lunch meat from our local restaurant depot. It is so much work to use that I ended up returning it. You have to try to stabilize it with your body and other items on your counter because it moves so much and you have to push so hard to get the meat through especially if you want to nice than the cut. I found an old the remodel kitchen aid slicer at a local thrift store for five bucks and it works 100 times better than this one ever did.

The Chef's Choice 609 Premium slicer is not a production quality slicer meant for use in a commercial setting. Instead, it is a small, home counter-top sized, slicer meant for household duty.If you are looking for a commercial grade product, then this is not the electric slicer for you.When my unit arrived to my home it was well packed. Unpacking and set up was a snap.While unpacking I paid close attention to the serrated blade. If you are not careful when unpacking the cardboard which protects the blade, you can cut yourself. The blade is extremely sharp!Once I had the slicer unpacked and set up, I did a visual inspection to make sure I had gotten all the packing materials off it and I gave it a quick wipe down, again being very careful of the blade. I then turned on the unit and it fired right up, the blade turned as it should and everything looked fine. I shut down the slicer and unplugged it from the wall.After unplugging the Chef's Choice 609 from the wall, I then removed all the slicing parts which can be hand washed in hot soapy water and did just that. I removed the blade, and being extremely careful, I washed it with a hot soapy dish rag, rinsed it, and dried it. The instruction manual informs the user to apply Vaseline on all exposed white gears on the cutting blade and behind it. Pay close attention to the instructions over this very important point, since every time this unit is cleaned, it must be lubed. Once I lubed it up, I put it all back together and pulled out a 7 pound ham I had chilling in the fridge for slicing.I have to say that I am quite pleased with how this machine slices. Using gently pressure to hold the ham in place, I was able to get consistently thin sandwich slices. However, this machine doesn't cut as fast as a commercial grade Hobart. Yet, it isn't so slow that it would be faster to cut slices with a chef's knife. It does a pretty good job.One thing I did notice while slicing is that if you press the meat too hard into slicer, the back-plate which the meat rests against, as it is slid into the blade. will flex. If you press too hard you can affect the thickness of your slices. I wasn't bothered by this fact, since I have no need for producing consistent sized slices, and if I did, I would just be aware of not pressing too hard as I slice food.Clean up of this slicer isn't difficult. I would not say it is very easy, but this is a food slicer and as such it has to be broken down and carefully washed. After every use you will want to take the blade off and wash the area of the slicer right behind it, since food particles do build up there. You will also want to wash the blade with hot soapy water and lubricate the the teeth of the gear attached to the back of it. Of course, you will also need to lubricate all the areas the manual recommends. As an extra step, I apply a very thin coat of cooking oil to the blade once it is clean.One other thought. There is a plastic nut that holds the cutting blade in place. There is no need to tighten it down with anything other than "finger" tight. Once the blade starts spinning, it tightens all the way down to where it should be. I can see where some reviewers have had problems with this plastic nut breaking, and that may be due to over tightening. I don't know that, but that would be my guess, since it looks like it could be torqued down too tight if one didn't know any better.Over all, I think this is a pretty great product for the price and I am happy with my purchase, thus far.

Haven't used it too much, but the times I have it's been great. I buy the giant block of Tillamook cheddar and it slices it up well, I've also used it to slice up my artisan homemade Dutch oven bread and it works super on my bread!!! I have it 4 stars because it's hard to clean the cheese residue of the blade after cutting cheese. Other than that I love it. It's not a commercial cutter so don't expect it to go super fast

Totally worth the wait!!!I waited for what felt like a month for this slicer to show up. When it finally did arrive, the box was so light I though for sure I had bought a piece of junk, but boy.was.I.wrong! This is the perfect in home kitchen appliance for slicing, I absolutely love it! I make vegan meats and meals for thevegancookbook.net and this is going to be a real game changer for me.

I bake a loaf of dense german rye bread per week and this slicer is great to create thin slices of bread for sandwiches or freezing. I have also sliced ham successfully. The machine feels heavy and it comes apart easily for cleaning. The blade is SHARP (be careful) - I only wish the off/on switch was accessible from to the sled so I could turn it off quickly if I got a finger in. There is a circuit breaker in the bottom which blew out a week ago (after two months of daily use) - it's easily accessible and was replaced in a jiff. Overall I love this thing and it has earned a permanent spot on my counter.

I did lots of research before I decided to purchase this slicer. I was fairly skeptical about the quality of the frame and the blade of in home slicer. I thought the product could be shoddy and not work as advertised. After watching a few youtube videos and online reviews, I decided to purchase this machine to try out. This is possibly the best $100 I've invested in a kitchen appliance. The machine works GREAT, it is easy to clean. Make sure to read instructions and lubricate properly. My family eat a lot of hot pots, and this has cut down the meat prep time from 25-30min to 5-7min. The slices can be cut really thin to the point it's restaurant quality if not better. The whole family is very satisfied with the purchase. Great product!

We are super happy about this purchase. I've started baking all of our bread, rather than an occasional loaf. This slicer lets us make perfect slices for sandwiches. It's light enough to store and move easily. Sturdy enough to do the job quickly and accurately.The only thing you need to be careful about is the fact that much of it is plastic. I've worked in several professional kitchens, and those industry slicers are all metal. If you apply pressure to the food you are slicing, there is no give. Therefore the slices are very uniform. Here, there is some give to the plastic, so if you push too hard, your slices become thicker. Still, for the price, I think it can't be beat. A little practice will let you get just what you want.

I reviewed a number of different meat slicers and the Chef's Choice 609 was rated the best for home use for the money. My son has the more deluxe model and uses it extensively and has for years. So far, he has no complaints.The standard serrated blade is probably all one needs for this unit. I did purchase the non-serrated blade because of a number of comments on how well it cuts meats and cheeses thinner. It just might but I've not had to even remove it from it's packaging. The serrated blade has cut everything I cut,up to and including, paper thin. Any thinner and I could read a newspaper through it.I've only had the unit for about a month or so and I imagine my review could drastically change if it goes south on me and the warranty proves to be useless. So far there's no indication of that happening.

I have owned one for years and wanted one for my parents. With the advance of age and illness, even simple slicing has become difficult for them. This slicer cleans easily and is safe for most adults to use. It is easier to adjust the thickness of this slicer than others I have used. It is great for onions, (think jumbo onion rings, yum) and see-through slices of tomatoes for tomato pie. Any meat should be chilled if slicing thin, especially jerky. Bulk sandwich meat slices easily. Will not cut bone-in meats. That call for a meat saw.

We used this to slice meat for jerky. It does a pretty good job (meat has to be slightly frozen). Not very easy to clean, lots of crevasses. In less than a year, it stopped working. It would seem the motor died. We don't use it but maybe 2x a month. A little disappointed it didn't last very long.

All-in-all I am pleased with the unit... so far:After reading the reviews I think this unit will meet my needs. Having worked in hardware for several years I learned to always read the instructions, it saves a lot mistakes. Following them the unit would not run. Checked and rechecked and finally found a thin plastic covering on the wall plug prongs, removed that, worked fine. They should have alerted me to this problem, I could easily have returned it as defective.For ease and safety I found a magnet would safely remove and install the blade, I didn't have to risk my fingertips.Unit came with extra fuse, this should have been attached to underside of unit so it can be located if needed, not stapled to manual.Per other reviews, I ordered a non-serrated blade, soon to be received. It would be great if there was a way to store it on the unit, safe from damage, injury or misplacement.Regretfully nothing 'fun' to slice today, It did do a great job on a loaf of day-old Rye bread.Will update review after further use.

Slices crusty sourdough bread easily, gotta adjust the sliding arm and the holder every now and again when slicing. Has a few nooks that need to be cleaned after for a medium clean up time.Makes good slices though and that's what really counts imo.

No, it's not a commercial unit, and it's relatively slow. The motor is not as powerful as some, but is sufficient if you feed it correctly. I have had 3 units of different brands over 30 years, and this is by far the best. All home units have some similar drawbacks, but this one is very easy to use and works well. Clean up is not bad, although you should clean before and after use of any machine. You can lube the blade with Pam to easily cut cheese; the non serrated blade makes beautiful slices from a chunk of cheese wheel. Since it is solid, it does not bend as you use it. It does not have the problems of the other 2 units which led to their demise.

I purchased the slicer in celebration of the Jewish New Year. I am not a member of the chosen people but I do love a good deli sandwich from one of their many fine establishments. The first thing I sliced was a 5 pound roast beef that I had prepared and refrigerated. The slicer made the perfect width cuts and was very consistent. The only issue out of the whole thing is its ability to cut through fat/gristle. I like to leave it on sometimes and the slicer doesn't always make clean cuts through those areas.The next thing I made was some 2 week cured pastrami I started before I had ordered the slicer. The cuts were perfect. My friends laughed at my slicer until they saw how perfect the pastrami came out as the Broncos crushed the Raiders. I also used it to slice some turkey breast I smoked.The best part about the slicer is actually something I didn't buy it for. The slicer does a great job on slicing vegetables and starches. I made some baked chips with the setting on paper thin. I also used it to thick cut about 20 onions for onion rings. Cuts prep time in half for most vegetables.Cleanup takes about 5 minutes and the only time I came close to cutting myself is when some fat got hung up near the blade. Just turn it off before you go reaching near the blade, pretty simple stuff.
